Structural Outlines of the Fourth Gospel
by Rev. Felix Just, S.J., Ph.D.
The Risen Jesus Appears to His Disciples in Galilee (21:1-14)
Narrator's Introduction: Jesus
"revealed himself" again to his disciples
at the Sea of Tiberias;
disciples listed:
Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the
sons of Zebedee, and two others (vv. 1-2)
Simon Peter: "I
am going fishing." (v. 3a)
They: "We also will
come with you." (v. 3b)
Narrator: They went out but caught nothing that night (v.
3c)
Narrator: At dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize him. (v. 4)
Jesus: "Children, have you caught anything
to eat?" (v. 5a)
They: "No." (v. 5b)
Jesus:
"Cast the net over the right side of the boat
and you will find something." (v. 6a)
Narrator: They
cast, but couldn't pull the net in, due to the number of fish (v.
6b)
Disciple whom Jesus loved, to Peter: "It is the Lord." (v. 7a)
Narrator: Simon Peter hears, puts on his clothes,
and jumps into the sea;
other disciples bring boat to the shore,
dragging the net with fish.
On shore, they see a charcoal
fire with fish and bread. (vv. 7b-9)
Jesus: "Bring some
of the fish you just caught." (v. 10)
Narrator: Simon
Peter goes, drags net ashore, full of 153 large fish (v. 11)
Jesus:
"Come, have breakfast." (v.12a)
Narrator's Conclusion: None of
the disciples ask, 'Who are you?' because they knew it was
the Lord.
Jesus took bread and gave it to them; likewise the fish. This was the third
time Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he had been raised
from the dead (vv. 12b-14)
Jesus and Simon Peter (21:15-19)
Peter and the Beloved Disciple (21:20-23)
Second Conclusion to the Gospel (21:24-25)
